Ju 88's of KG30 hit Bridlington 15/8/40

Trying to ascertain the figure of how many bombed this small seaside town, in the afternoon. During research have so far seen figures of between 4, 8, and 12.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

They were trying to bomb Driffield? Some records say up to 50 were involved in this attack

Yes, Driffield was the target, but attacking force scattered before reaching the target?

Cheers Chris and EdNorth

Realise the force split before hitting the main target, just wondered how many headed towards Bridlington and subsequently dropped a stick of bombs which took out a pair of semi-detached houses and an ammo dump.

Hi,

66 had taken off.
For sure 8 did not reach the target (shot down or forced to turn back prior to the target).

Robert

Cheers Rob, There also seems to be some discrepancy in the timings on this raid and the subsequent ones on 19/20 August, 23 August 1940

Re: Ju 88's of KG30 hit Bridlington 15/8/40

216 divided by four, gives exactly 54 a/c (assuming no bomb hung up), so if eight did not reach target, 62 a/c be the figure. So if 66 took off, some (11) may have carried load of just two 250 and one 500 kg each, and one plane with two 500 kg. *(Assuming all carried 1,000 kg each). Note: these lost were reported be "Ju 88 C variant" (giving false indication of Zerstörers), but was "equipment condition C" (Long range), that had fuel tanks in both bomb bays and no 50 kg bombs (carried internally) are reported. Thus these aircraft lost were (likely) seven Ju 88 A-1/C version, altho one is reported be A-5 version, that can also have been Ju 88 A-5/C (but its yet not known how many A-5 in fact took part).
