GM-1 / MW-50 / C-3 Injection in the BMW 801D

Would someone please rule-out (or confirm) whether GM-1 was ever used operationally in the BMW-801D series engines (FW-190A/F/G 3-8.) I'm thinking not.

In 1944, did MW-50 became operational, but was very rare, in the BMW 801D series?

Supplemental C-3 injection was used until mid-1944, discontinued during the fuel shortage of 1944, and then what happened?

Also, how was this system turned on: with a throttle position forward, or a switch on the panel?

GM-1 / MW 50 / C3-Einspritzung with the BMW 801 D-2

Hi Bronc

I honestly have to say that I have never seen any definitive evidence that GM-1 was used by the BMW 801 D-2 powered Fw 190 A-series. Technical Description 284 for the Fw 190 A-8 states that although the installation of a nitrous-oxide boost system was feasible it was not normally done. MW 50 was tested on Fw 190 A-4 "SB + IK" (W.Nr. 0140 231) at Rechlin at the end of 1943 but results were disappointing and thus this system was not pursued. C3-Einspritzung on the other hand is known to have been in operational use mainly by fighter-bombers in the middle of 1943. The control knob for the latter was located beneath the left side of the main instrument panel. I hope this helps and any comments or correction are welcome.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: GM-1 / MW-50 / C-3 Injection in the BMW 801D

Hallo Leo,

my reference material adresses SB+IK as A-0/U12 WNr 0031. Afaik there was no A-4 with WNr 0231.

0140231 is in fact a A-2 (0120231) StKz DN+CK and was lost 19 August 1942 at Dieppe. So something must be wrong.

Regards

RolandF

GM-1 / MW 50 / C3-Einspritzung with the BMW 801 D-2

Hi RolandF

Most likely the aircraft that was tested was Fw 190 A-0/U12 "SB + IK" (W.Nr. 0031). Many thanks for your additional information correcting this error. Apparently the performance increase with MW 50 was only some 16 km/h at 100 meters and this together with a rather complicated installation led to it being passed over in favor of C3-Einspritzung and Erhöhte Notleistung.

Horrido!

Leo

Where can I find additional details of the C3-Einspritzung system on the BMW 801 D-2? (Website or book)

Thanks!

Bronc
