Searching for info/photos on 2 x recon Do17P-1 lost during Phoney War on 2 March 1940
Hello,
I now have photos on about 2/3 of all the LW crashes in the west during the Phoney War. Still trying to locate info/photos on a few others: 1) "2 March 1940: 4.(F)/11 Dornier Do17P-1 (3600). Shot down by P/O Mitchell and Sgt Soper of No.1 Squadron and crashed at La Petite-Pierre, France, at 11.05 a.m. (Beo) Oberlt Adolf Leupelt and (Ff) Fw Karl Lajczyk captured badly wounded. (Bf) Fw Heinz Bür captured unhurt. Aircraft 6M+AM 100% write-off." 2) "2 March 1940: 4.(F)/121 Dornier Do17P-1. Shot down by Sgt Doudies and Sgt Sonntag of GC II/7 over Luxeuil-les-Bains, France, during reconnaissance of airfields between Remiremont and Montbeliard 8.34 a.m. (Ff) Uffz Karl-Heinz Jagielki and (Beo) Uffz Alfred Matheus killed. (Bf) Gefr Karl Reschke baled out and captured wounded. Aircraft 100% write-off." Note: Besides photo(s) of #2, I'd obviously like a more precise description of where the plane actually crashed. This should be coded 7A+_M. Thanx for all the help you've been giving. I'm hoping that we'll find photos of most of the rest of these. |

Rémi,
Thanx, that definitely helps. Might also help ID unknown crash photos of this one. |

Rémi,
Could you please cite a source for me of your location information. Does it provide any other details of this incident? Any chance that there are photos associated with this info? |

Re: Searching for info/photos on 2 x recon Do17P-1 lost during Phoney War on 2 March 1940
Larry,
1) "2 March 1940: 4.(F)/11 Dornier Do17P-1 (3600). Aircraft 6M+AM 100% write-off." It is not info filed at the SHD into the POW report of march 1940 : The a/c lost on 2 march 1940 had crew : -Lt Karl Barchfeld, 22 years old, obs, wounded -Fw Wilhelm Will, 26 years old, pilot, -Obergefr Franz Jakubeck, 23 years old, W/AG According to the POW unit is "Aufkl.Gr.0.1154" ex "Gr 22", airfield is Ippsheim. Location of the crash is Struth -7 kms NW of Petite-Pierre (Bas-Rhin) "The pilot dived and like engines that have been put out of use by the guns the landing was brutal and somewhat damaged plane". Re: Searching for info/photos on 2 x recon Do17P-1 lost during Phoney War on 2 March 1940
Bertrand,
There were three recon Do17Ps lost on 2 March. I already have good photos of one of them, 4N+KH of 1.(F)/22, which is why I didn't list it on my TOCH info request. The codes on both sides are quite clear. However, I have the same crew as you cited, but a different crash location. It may be that we have the crash locations of these two confused in our DB. Here is what we carry for the Barchfeld crash: "2 March 1940: 1.(F)/22 Dornier Do17P-1. Engaged by S/Lt Martin and Adj Le Gloan of GC III/6 during photo-reconnaissance sortie between Achen and Wingen 10.30 a.m. and brought down at Ferme Sainte-Marie, south-east of Bouzonville, France. (FF) Lt Karl-Wilhelm Barchfeld, (BO) Fw Wilhelm Will, and (BF) Obergefr Franz Jabubeck captured. Aircraft 4N+KH a 100% write-off.” It would appear that my request for the 4.(F)/11 aircraft may be down at the wrong location, but otherwise the info may be accurate? This needs sorting out. |

Re: Searching for info/photos on 2 x recon Do17P-1 lost during Phoney War on 2 March 1940
Hello,
Once again, with help from the readers of this board, we have corrected these two entries. They now read: 1) "2 March 1940 Western Front Amend: 4.(F)/11 Dornier Do17P-1 (3600). Shot down by S/Lt Martin and Adj Le Gloan of GC III/6 and belly-landed at Ferme Sainte-Marie, south-east of Bouzonville, France, at 10.30 a.m. BO Oberlt Adolf Leupelt and FF Fw Karl Lajczyk both captured badly wounded, BF Fw Heinz Bür captured unhurt. Aircraft 6M+AM 100% write-off." 2) "2 March 1940 Western Front Amend: 4.(F)/121 Dornier Do17P-1. Shot down by Sgt Doudies and Sgt Sonntag of GC II/7 over Luxeuil-les-Bains during reconnaissance of airfields between Remiremont and Montbeliard and crashed at Harol, west of Epinal, France, at 8.34 a.m. FF Uffz Karl-Heinz Jagielki and BO Uffz Alfred Matheus both killed, BF Gefr Karl Reschke baled out and captured wounded. Aircraft 7A+KM 100% write-off. (Bertrand)" Interrogation reports and contemporary French military reports supplied by Bertrand resulted in these corrections. We already have two good photos of the third Do17P lost that day, 4N+KH of 1.(F)/22. It crashed at Struth, NW of La Petite-Pierre, France, but we still need photos of the other two above. Who can help? |
