Target Photo Budapest

The attached depicting an unknown target under intense bombardment by 15th AF on July 1944, can this specific target on the Budapest perimeter be identified ?

Similar photo also appears on fold3.com (free to register).

Target is described as a RailRoad bridge.
Copy paste this location into Google maps. I think this is it.

In your photo, North is to the left. The photo is a cropped Strike Attack Vertical (SAV) photo taken by one of the attacking planes. The fold3.com photo appears to be an un-cropped photo, with bombs exploding slightly below the center of the photo. In the fold3.com photo the attack appears to have been flown from North to South.

Re: Target Photo Budapest

Yes, this is the Southern RR bridge of Budapest, just north of Csepel island. During the construction of the new Lágymányosi bridge (parallel to this) dozens of unexploded U.S. bombs were found and removed under Xtremely difficult (underwater) circumstances. See attached pic of one of the unexploded U.S. 1000 pounders from the river. (This was removed from the other, Northern RR bridge of Budapest by military divers.)

BIG respect to them!!!

Gabor

Gabor

Many thanks for the update , from what you are saying I take it that
the target for today was this specific bridge .

RSwank

I don't have a trifold account nor I plan to have one due
their ads policies, maybe you can post their shot ? The
shot posted was from a 483rd BG vet who sent me
numerous target photos and material period 1944

Re: Target Photo Budapest

The fold3 picture description says it was taken by a 483rd BG, 817th BS plane "852" on 5 September 1944 and the target was RR bridge (S) Budapest. From the markings on the picture itself, it appears to have been taken from 26,000 feet with a 24 inch (focal length) camera at 10:31. (B-17 42-102852 was "Mary Alice" in the 483rd. It flew 97 missions and survived the war.)

Re: Target Photo Budapest

RSwank- Thanks for posting , I have no closer info regarding the 483rd target bombing in Budapest , was just grateful I was given the photos. My area of interest remains Ploesti low and high level air campaigns and Shuttle bombings from Poltawa to the same destinations .Thanks again
