Name of a village near Rschew

Hi all,

Attached is a scan of the back of photo. As far as I can make out it reads "bei Roro???? (Rschew)".

Can any one identify this village near Rshew?

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

My immediate thought was BORODINO, ENE of Vyazma and SE of Rzhev.

in the Russian no basis word "Roro ..."

Re: Name of a village near Rschew

The first letter is a Sütterlin "K"; the last a sloppy Sütterlin "o". I would go for written "Korowino" which would confirm Kirill´s reading.

Roland

Korovino
There are at least 36 of them in Russia. This is the only one I could locate in Tver Oblast, which is the same Oblast where Rzhev is located:
- 173 km ENE of Rzhev and 46 km NNE of Klin at 56 42 52 N – 37 01 14 E. It appears to be just about the furthest point of advance of 3. Panzergruppe on 5 December 1941.

Re: Name of a village near Rschew

Sorry, but "коровы" (cows) in the Tver region is not less than the cows in Texas...

It seems I spoke too soon. The place I'm looking for was still in german occupation in the spring of 1942.

So this would read "bei Korowino (Rschew)" - perhaps this was a suburb or district of Rzhev that was destroyed in the heavy fighting for the town or had its name changed or deleted after the war? I think "bei" was/is used to indicate close by in the sense of a radius of not more than 10-15 kilometers?
