SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

[IMG][/IMG]

Hi Folks,

I acquired a small lot of photos with a Flugbuch I recently purchased, which were the property of an as yet unidentified crewman, possibly LG1, who flew many Feindflug during the Blitz. He also flew against Malta and North Africa out of Catania and Greece and was killed on the 12th March 1942 in Ju88 A5 L1+FM flying out of Iraklion. The seller said he was shot down in Sicily and his last entry appears to be for the flight before from Iraklion to what looks like possibly "elansis"?

Anyway, I wondered if anyone would know more about the circumstances behind this collision...he flew many Feindflug out of Catania and I wondered if this was where it took place with a mixed Luftwaffe/Italian force? Thanks for your help!

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

Thanks guys, I'll upload some more pics tomorrow. There's some more writing behind the picture of the ship, but no notes on the incident with the SM79. Many thanks for your help on the dates, I've had a bit of help earlier from Chris who said he is 4/LG1, so that would seem right if the ground incident was also with 4/LG1. Much appreciated chaps!

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

No, that 8 Mar 42 was Ju 88 A-4 version, 5613, this (in picture) is Ju 88 A-5, I think this incident was earlier, in 1941 and possibly in Sicily. A few more pics are around but none shows code! Three incidents are candidates:

0882200 Ju 88 A-5 5./LG 1 (Fliegerkorps X)
Non-OPS (H) hit by Italian aircraft (50% Er) on ground at Catania 07.03.1941 - This may have been the Italian SM.79 Bomber known hitting an unknown A-5 from the rear (photos) but photos do not show code -ed

0884243 Ju 88 A-5 Stab./LG 1 (Fliegerkorps X)
Non-OPS (H) destroyed (100%) when hit by landing Italian aircraft at Catania Airfield 16.01.1941

0887157 Ju 88 A-5 5./LG 1 (Fliegerkorps X)
Non-OPS (H) damaged (100%) when hit by landing Italian Aircraft at Catania Airfield 16.01.1941 [ A5 7757 in LWFLV losses; amd 7157 later ]

Looks like the SM79 is amorous and wants to have a Breda 88 with the Junkers?

All the best

Haha! I thought this forum was too serious for that sort of thing, nice to know you're at my level

Thanks for all the info ed, fascinating stuff.....I can't imagine it was a landing incident, looking at the relative lack of damage and the fact the Ju88 was covered up, I wonder if it was just a taxying incident at night?
