2./Erg.KG(J) ?
Hello,
I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is 2./Erg.KG(J) ? I realize it may be 2. Staffel / Ergänzungs Kampfgeschwader (Jagd) Was that a unit by itself or is something missing like if it was KG(J) 51 A He 111 from this unit crashed in February 1945 in Munich killing the entire crew. I have searched for this unit but cannot find anything...help please!! Thanks in advance, Christian

Re: 2./Erg.KG(J) ?
Hello Christian,
It should be 2./EKG(J) Ergänzungs Kampfgeschwader (Jagd) by Feb 45. Before, it was Erg.KGr.(J) Ergänzungs Kampfgruppe (Jagd): http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/ergkgj.html Roger |

Re: 2./Erg.KG(J) ?
I.(Erg.)/KG (J)
Formation. (Nov 44) Formed 21 November 1944 (23 November by another account) at Pilsen (Plzeň)/Czechoslovakia as Ergänzungs-Kampfgruppe (J)/IX.Fliegerkorps (J) with a Gruppenstab and 1. – 4.Staffel by renaming IV./KG 27 plus elements of IV./KG 55. Its function was to provide Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter conversion training for former bomber pilots and then serve as a source for replacement crews. Two months after formation, probably on 23 January 1945, it was renamed I.(Erg.)/KG (J) as plans got underway to expand the unit into a Geschwader. Due to the critical fuel situation, flying activity was severely restricted and conversion training never progressed much past theoretical classroom instruction. Czechoslovakia and Germany. (Nov 44 - Mar 45) Feb 45: transferred from Pilsen to Ansbach during the first half of February. 17 Feb 45: Bf 109G-14 crash landed NE of Ansbach, 40%, and same date a He 111H-10 crashed at Munich, 100%, 4 killed. 25 Feb 45: Bf 109G-6 crashed at Fp.Pilsen, 90%, Hptm. Eduard Skrzipek killed. 28 Feb – 2 Mar 45: 5 unrelated Bf 109G-6, Fw 190A-8 and Me 262A-1 crashes reported in the triangle Stuttgart-Nürnberg-Munich, these being the last known for the Gruppe. Mar 45: moved from Ansbach to Gablingen. 29 Mar 45: renamed V./Erg.-JG 2. FpNs: Gruppenstab (L 63318) 1.Staffel (L 60362) 2.Staffel (L 61396) 3.Staffel (L 62366) 4.Staffel (L 63352) Kommandeur: Hptm. Walter Engel (DKG) (21 Nov 44 - 9 Dec 44) Hptm. Walter Grasemann (RK) (10 Dec 44 - 29 Mar 45) L. |

"Was that a unit by itself or is something missing like if it was KG(J) 51"
There never was a KG(J) 51. KG 51 remained under its original name because it never converted to the fighter role, it kept on bombing. |
