Question Pls, help identify Jagdwaffe units involved

Recently I've been researching the subject of the Curtiss P-40's service in MTO. They were involved in several big clashes with the Luftwaffe. Could anyone help identify which German fighter units were involved in each case and possibly verify the number of credited victories?

18th April 1943 over Cap Bon, Tunisia, the famous "Palm Sunday Massacre" - several 109s were claimed downed, also six P-40s and one Spitfire lost

10th June 1943, over Pantelleria - apparently Warhawks twice bounced 109s escorting rescue flying boats; P-40 pilots were credited with 21 victories.

30th July 1943 over Sardinia - 325th FG's Warhawks were credited with destruction of as many as 21 Messerchmitts 109, for the loss of only one of their own.

Thank you in advance

Hello Lagarto,

a quick look on loss reports may help you:

18. April 1943:
I. and II. /JG 53 lost 4 Bf 109s in combat at Souk-el-Khemis and the Isle of Zembra with 2 pilots MIA and one POW.
One Bf 109 from II./JG 77 was damaged 15% in combat at Pl.Q. 97/4/4/2

10. June 1943:
II./JG 27 lost 11 Bf 109s in combat with Spitfire and P-40s in the Pantellaria-area with sevens pilots MIA and two KIA

30. July 1943:
III./JG 77 lost 5 Bf 109s in combat with Spitfires (1) and P-40s (4) SE of Alghero with 1 pilot KIA, 1 pilot MIA and 3 pilots WIA.

I don't have Jochen Priens Geschwader chronicles at hand, but they should have more information on the combats you are interested in.

HTH

Carl

Re: Pls, help identify Jagdwaffe units involved

Figures according to Prien, saved from an old post of mine:

Interestingly the kill inflation is about the same 4-5x

LW -> 5 kills -> according to 325th 1 loss

US -> 21 kills -> according to LW only 4 losses (1 KIA, 3 WIA)

A battle outcome of 4:1 in favor of the 325th.

Hi,

we should not forget that 325 had at least one plane damaged (Lt.W.B.Walker) on 30.07.43.

Regards

Robert

Well, I'd have to check Prien again on how those German figures match (incl. damaged a/c, if they are listed).
