He115 lost 30 May 1942 Convoy PQ16??
Hi guys
An eyewitness on one the escort vessels during Convoy PQ16 to Murmansk reported seeing a He115 crash into the sea near his ship on 30 May 1942 - "it swerved off at about 100 yards range and crashed into the sea with a splash like a leaping salmon". I can't find a loss to match! Although a He115 of KuFlGr.906 is shown as being lost four days later. I wonder if there was a delay in reporting the loss? I'm sure/hope 'Seaplanes' will advise! Re: He115 lost 30 May 1942 Convoy PQ16??
Hi Brian
Lady M was the vessel and her master Graeme Ogden was the witness, who also helped shoot down the He115 (described in his book 'My Sea Lady' on page 119 soft cover reprint 2013) as a Heinkel 112 seaplane. The book originally appeared in 1963 and was written with the aid of his personal diary, so one would assume its accuracy. Any ideas? Cheers Brian |

Re: He115 lost 30 May 1942 Convoy PQ16??
Sorry Brian I only have two Ju88s on the 30-May one crashed at Banak on take off and the other is shown as missing over the Polar Sea with crew of Oblt Scharff of II/KG30 all missing. I see Lady M was the ASW Trawler HMS Madeleine , online shows she picked up a number of ships survivors but no mention of the shooting down of the He 115. I only have a He 115 crashing on take off by Kistrand on the 28th. May with crew killed and another attacked on a transfer flight and damaged 40% with a crewman wounded on the 4th June,

Re: He115 lost 30 May 1942 Convoy PQ16??
Hi Brian
Yes, that's all I have. Might the He115 have been shot down and the crew survived and rescued unhurt by German craft? Would the loss of the aircraft still be shown? I expect so, but .......... Clutching at straws!! Cheers Brian |

Re: He115 lost 30 May 1942 Convoy PQ16??
All damage in excess of 10% was normally reported in the Gen.Qu. damage/loss reports. In addition you have the same in the KTB of Gen.d.Lw.b.Ob.d.M./Qu. I have no He 115 damaged or lost on 30. May 1942 +/- one day.
