1 FG P38 2/10/1942 Lt.Young

Hi !

On October 2,1942 37 P38's of 1 FG (Circus 221) were escorting B17 (with the Avions Potez factory near Amiens as target).
Lt Young left the formation at approx 15 hours (cause = ? ,technical problems = ?) and was shot down by Uffz Hans-Joachim Stoller of JG26 at 16h25.Stoller himself was shot down the same day by a Spitfire (Source: JG26 War Diary - D.Caldwell)
According to ' Allied Combats and casualties ' of Tony Wood (which is available on his website) the pilot bailed out. He got killed and is presently buried in the USA.
A confiscated German document at Nara gives that the plane crashed 3 km w.of Coquelles,France.

Who has more details about the final flight of Lt.Young ? It is possible that the serial of the plane was 41-75..

Many thanks and best regards from tropical Belgium

Luc

Are you sure he died? According to 'losses of the 8th and 9th Air Forces' Lt William Young was taken prisoner. Unfortunately it doesn't have the serial number for the P-38F, but he was part of the 71st FS and it says that he came down 'near Calais' which would fit with the NARA location of '3km west of Coquelles'.

Hi, could only find two that might fit on the Nara site.

12044973 of Syracuse NY and 12075917 of Queens NY.
Enlisted in 1941 /Air Corps.
Many Many others, 12 pages, 10 to a page.
Found none to fit in the POW section.
How about a link to the German captured document, so we can read it , Luc

Hi Steve and Alex,

Many thanks for your replies.

What happened with 1Lt Young is for me still a mistery.
One source gives that he was a pow, a second one mentions that he bailed out of his plane and a third source gives him as killed.
His asn was probably 0-431186.
I don't have the German documents but perhaps I can try to get a copy of them.

Best regards

Luc
