Luftwaffe BoB wing camouflage
First time poster....
I've been looking for info about Luftwaffe wing camouflage at the time of the Battle of Britain. I seem to be able to find a lot of info on profiles - fuselage - but little on wing tops. I have a specific question: were the camouflage patterns fixed across the entire luftwaffe? specific squadrons? I had just assumed they were individual up to the plane crews, but I was looking at a photo of some 110s from Erpro 210 and two of them seemed to have identical patterns. It was hard to tell if that was true of other planes (not clear in the photo) but some looked like they might. Thanks, Phil |

Re: Luftwaffe BoB wing camouflage
There was a standard pattern for all large aircraft, but the aircraft planform would fit in a different place for each type. The resulting pattern would be identical for every example of a type (i.e. all He.111s). Theoretically this could exist in a mirror version, or with the colours exchanged, but this does not seem to have happened often, if at all, with the 2-colour pattern adopted in 1938. It does seem to have been more common with the 3-colour pattern used previously, but even then not all companies (if any!) used all the options. This pattern did apply down to the Bf.110s. If you compare the pattern on different types you can see the similarities that confirm one single pattern was used.
The camouflage pattern was not used on single-engined fighters, which appear to have been slightly less standardised through the war but still as delivered by the factory. |

Re: Luftwaffe BoB wing camouflage
Interesting, and thanks very much! Let me make sure I understand. So the bf110s would have an identical pattern to other 110s, or an he111 would have identical patterns to other he111s, but the bf109s would be unique per aircraft?
Fascinating. |

Re: Luftwaffe BoB wing camouflage
Theoretically yes for Bf 110 & He 111. Bf 109s would be similar to others within Staffel or Gruppe but not identical. There are many books out there on this
