Ground attack during Wacht am Rheine

Were the 21cm mortars and bombs used during this operation and if so, how successful were they?

Re: Ground attack during Wacht am Rheine

You mean during the whole period? From December 16th till early January? There were only a few units left equipped with WGr 21 cm

Ground attack units? NSGr. 1, NSGr. 2 and NSGr. 20 were bombing by night. By day SG 4 was using bombs and sometimes Panzerblitz rockets.

WGr. 21, I’m not so sure but if you’re reading the online ULTRA messages on the National Archives website, the word to look for is “mortar” when used in connection with aircraft.

Thank you Nick.

Did IV./JG54, III./JG2 or any other day fighter units fly any A2G missions?

I don’t know, but as I said, the online ULTRA material is a good place for you to look, especially anything from II. Jagdkorps (sometimes referred to as “2 JK” or “2 Jig King”).

III./JG 2 flew missions with WGr 21 cm. Other units flew strafing missions but I know only of III./JG 2 flying with mortars.
