I/KG26 records 1939

Hello folks,
I am a historian doing research into the Battle of Barking Creek of 6 Sept 1939.
I am hoping someone may be able to point me in the direction of where, if any, records are stored of early flights over Britian by I/KG26. Brian Cull's book Blue on Blue mentions that six He-111s overflew British airspace on this date, but I cannot find any reference to verify this.
Can anyone be of assistance on this?

Many thanks in advance

Nick

Hello Nick,

The incident you refer to is identified as an accident involving false information. This led to a few British losses without the actual appearance of German aircraft.

...and remember that at this stage of the war, both side were not attacking mainland targets rather littoral or shipping targets

Hi,

it was a single Do 17Z of Westa 26 (with crew of Olt. von Rotberg), which caused this commotion. Source: KTB of Aufkl.Gr.122.

Hello Ed,

Thanks for your reply. I hate to sound like an arsenal but it is information like what is stored on wilipedia on this particular incident that I am particularly trying to disprove and get to the bottom of. I know you dont know my intentions so it's not your fault. This incident has been misreported by so many sources over time that the truth is not always clear. My paper is going to try and be the best case study to date of what 'actually' happened.

Thanks for your help though.

Nick

Yes indeed, but a DO18 was engaged by RAF Lockheed Hudsons over the North Sea on the night of 3rd September 1939. Brian Cull was clear that 6 he-111 were actually in the area on 6th. Thays what I need to find out.

Robert,
Fascinating, I would certainly like to find out more about this. Do you know where I can find that reference online?

Nick
