4/ZG76 a/casualties 17.5.40.

Hi on the 17.5.40 4/ZG76 reported two Bf110C a/c damaged following combat
south - east of Albert around 11.50hrs.
One of these is believed to be coded M8+DM with two crew not named unhurt,
where the other one is bel. to be the a/c of Ofw.Georg Anthony with no code listed. Source The Battle of France Then and Now Peter Cornwell pg.309.

Since I got this great book I have found some notes describing a loss on 17.5.40 listing a Bf110C M8+CM W.Nr.2825 as belly landed. I have a name with a question mark against it with the name Jentsch? I wonder if this is Obgef.
Herbert Jentsch who was captured on 16.8.40 with Marchfelder when flying now with the StabII/ZG76. Unfortunately I didn't record the source of this on the notes!
From an online search I believe Jentsch's flugbuch survives so I'd be grateful if anybody could confirm his a/c as being M8+CM on 17.5.40.

Best regs,
Steve.

No doubt John V will answer this but if Jentsch was flying with Marchfelder, the unit would have been II./ZG 1 at that time?

Nordmeyer was when he was shot down in August 1940 but I am not sure if he was his BF then

Re: 4/ZG76 a/casualties 17.5.40.

Hi Chris thanks for your reply, I have no means of clarifying whether Jentsch was flying with Marchfelder or whether their unit was in fact II/ZG1 on the 17.5.40. They definitely were together on 16.8.40.
If John Vasco could help it would be appreciated.

Alain57 thank you also , I have Nordmeyer on this date as well.

Best regs,
Steve.

Re: 4/ZG76 a/casualties 17.5.40.

Hi Steve,
I think the new facts you mention came from a discussion on the Philippeville scrap yard on this forum. I also have the two entries of Peter Cornwell updated as follows:

May 17: 4./ZG76 Messerschmitt Bf110C-2 (3902). Belly-landed at Sovet emergency landing ground, west of Ciney, believed damaged in attacks by Adj Angibault of GC II/10 and Sgt Singeot of GC III/10 over Ham, south-east of Albert, 11.50 a.m. FF Ofw George Anthony and BF Uffz H. Nordmeier unhurt. Aircraft M8+DM damaged but repairable. The wreckage was later transported to Philippeville scrap yard.

May 17: 4./ZG76 Messerschmitt Bf110C-1 (2825). Forced-landed at Philippeville damaged in combat with Bloch 152s during escort sortie for He111s south-east of Albert 11.50 a.m. Possibly that attacked by Sgt Carbon of GC III/10 over Roye. FF Fw Herbert Jentsch and BF unhurt. Aircraft M8+CM 15% damaged but repairable.

Cheers, Pieter

Re: 4/ZG76 a/casualties 17.5.40.

Hi Pieter thank you for providing this information on the incidents from 4/ZG76 on 17.5.40. This may well be the source I scribbled down at that time, I already had the identity and loss of M8+DM but no names. I see Jentsch is listed as a pilot here could this be a mistake I wonder?
Best regs,
Steve.

I am puzzled about the WNr 3902. According to printed sources that belonged to a Bf 110 E-1

Is it really correct?

Cheers

Stig,
You are right.
However, I think wherever that W. Nr. came from, it is a typo. If it was 3092, it fits in with the C-2 production run.

Re: 4/ZG76 a/casualties 17.5.40.

Pieter,
My information from Peter is as follows:
4./ZG76 Messerschmitt Bf110C. Crash-landed at Sovet emergency landing ground, west of Ciney, badly damaged in attacks by Adj Angibault of GC II/10 and Sgt Singeot of GC III/10 over Ham, south-east of Albert, 11.50 a.m.Crew unhurt. Aircraft M8+DM 100% write-off.

4./ZG76 Messerschmitt Bf110C. Forced-landed at Philippeville damaged in combat with Bloch 152s during escort sortie for He111s south-east of Albert 11.50 a.m. Possibly that attacked by Sgt Carbon of GC III/10 over Roye. FF Oberfw Georg Anthony and BF Uffz Heinrich Nordmeier both unhurt. Aircraft 15% damaged but repairable.

No mention of W. Nr..
