Brigadier Vivian Dykes' death
Hi Gents,
I am interested in the background of Brigadier Vivian Dykes' death in 1943. The details of his Liberator catastrophe do not exist in the internet unfortunately. Would not you like to write a little more about it? What Liberator model killed Brigadier? LB-30, LB-30A or one of more classic B-24 family? Is there known serial of this aircraft? Was this aircraft operated by No. 1425 Communications Flight as in the case of majority of VIP-type flights then? What was the reason of the catastrophe? I would be thankful for additional info about it. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards E. |

Re: Brigadier Vivian Dykes' death
Hi,
The only B-24 Liberator to crash on 29 January 1943 which would fit the date of Dykes death, was Liberator I AM913. The aircraft was nearing base (Talbenny) after a flight from Africa when No.4 engine caught fire and all the electrics failed. No.4 engine then fell out and the fire went out. The pilot lowered the undercarriage and No.3 engine cut. The aircraft undershot and broke up due to obstructions. 11 killed 8 injured AM913 went on charge with 120 Squadron. 1425 Flight and when lost was with 511 Squadron I only have the names of three of the crew. Maybe this info will give you a lead. Regards Peter Last edited by Peter Clare; 11th September 2006 at 16:59. |

Re: Brigadier Vivian Dykes' death
Hello,
![]() Thank you very much for both replies. Strange type this LB-30 family. It killed more Allied people without one enemy bullet than the Germans would dream about. Thanks and best regards ![]() E. |
