transport loss on 15 january 1943?

Hello,

Is it known if the aeriallift from Sicily to Africa had losses on Transport planes on 15 January 1943?

I have found 15 missing in action soldiers from a Infantry Regiment on this day and the cause of loss is not referenced, as place: Napels => Africa.

As such this makes me believe they were most probably part from a aerial transport that did not make it to Africa.

Thanks in advance,

The only missing transport in Med on that day was Me 323, WNr. 1211, DT+IK of 2./KG.z.b.V. 323, which is reported missing en route Trapani - Bizerta.

Hello Matti,

Thank you, this would fit. Are there names known from this loss? Or something known about the cargo?

Hi Stijn,

A little more on the Me 323 loss. It was almost certainly the victim of American fighters, with the 48th FS/14th FG claiming the destruction of a "six-engine aircraft" between Marettimo and Fatignano Islands on a mission between 10:00 and 13:50. Soon after, at 14:20, a pilot of the 49th FS/14th FG claimed a "six engine seaplane" damaged, and also claimed the probable destruction of a Ju 52.

PS - I'll be sending you an email in the very near future.

Cheers,
Andrew A.
