USAAF Douglas O-38 & Northrop YA-13 Mineola NY
Hello,
Currently on ebay there is a photo of, I think, a Douglas O-38B captioned as being based at Mineola NY in 1943 at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/154692461650...MAAOSwTOdhirX2 It could be that the photo is miscaptioned and although some other of the other aircraft which can be seen at : https://www.ebay.de/sch/m.html?item=...+1943&_sacat=0 although it does appear a O-38B was at Mineola, but that was stated to be CL-26 according to Joe Baughers page at http://joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1930.html The machine in the photo appears to be in flying condition.Or perhaps not? I also not that the YA-13 at https://www.ebay.de/itm/154692464501...oAAOSwFlZhirar is mentioned as being New York based perhaps adding to the plausibility of Mineola as a location. Does anyone know how long the YA-13 remained with the USAAF? Regards, Clint Last edited by musec04; 9th November 2021 at 21:14. |

I reckon Mineola means Roosevelt Field and not neighboring Mitchel Field?

Re: USAAF Douglas O-38 & Northrop YA-13 Mineola NY
In 1943 the YA-13 didn't exist.
It was converted to the XA-16 in Jan 1935. It is known to have ended its days at Roosevelt Field, NY as a GIA with an unnamed mechanics school. Later scrapped in an unknown Long Island junkyard. Unfortunately no dates...but I see no problems with all the photos located now were taken at the same time with this school. Being a GIA presumably also ment such airframes were "messed around" a bit since the photo I have of the XA-16 in its prime differs a bit from the photo seen now. Cheers Stig |

Hi,
Thank you both for the replies. Not sure why I wrote YA-13 as both sources I looked at indicated that it was updated to the XA-16. It would be interesting to know the name of the Mechanics School should anyone know it. Regards, Clint |

Re: USAAF Douglas O-38 & Northrop YA-13 Mineola NY
I gathered that the Roosevelt Aviation School had a US gov't contract to train airplane (engine) mechanics starting Aug 1939.
In 1943 newspaper clippings it's still simply referred to as Airplane Mechanics School, Roosevelt Field. Regards, Leendert |
