KuFlGr106 operations on 19th August 1942
Does anybody know if documents still exist recording the operations of KuFlGr106 on the 19th August 1942.
Not being a IX.Fliegerkorps unit, their operations aren't mentioned in that units records and looking through the Bundesarchiv search engine, I can't see any relevant documents there. From an earlier thread (thanks Chris) I know that they took part in the afternoon/evening operations against 'Portsmouth', but I wonder if they flew other missions during the day. Any ideas were I can look? Regards, Steve |

Re: KuFlGr106 operations on 19th August 1942
Most of this can be found in deZeng/Stankey: Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe, 1933-1945.
KGr 106 Kampfgruppe 106 (Unit Code M2+) Aug 42: at the beginning of August the Gruppe began to move from Dinard to Châteaudun to rest and train a large number of new and inexperienced crews that had arrived to replace the heavy losses resulting from 8 months of uninterrupted operations. On arrival at Châteaudun, most of these new crews were immediately sent to Cognac in SW France to attend a Ju 88 glide- and dive-bombing course run by I./Kampfschulgeschwader 3. The training was broken off on 19 August and the Gruppe began operations against shipping being used in the Dieppe landings, attacking Portsmouth harbor after refueling at Dinard. 19 Aug 42: at least 3 Ju 88A-4s (M2+FH,EL,FL) shot down by fighters and AA fire in the Isle of Wight – Selsey Bill area during early evening strikes on ships and landing craft involved in the Canadian/British amphibious assault on the French coast at Dieppe, 8 KIA, 1 MIA and 3 captured; a Ju 88A-4 also damaged in an accident at Fp.Châteaudun, 20%. 26 Aug 42: Ju 88A-4 accident at Fp.Châteaudun, 20%. 31 Aug 42: renamed II./KG 6 at Châteaudun. I can see no mention of 106 taking part before the evening and from what I can see no more than 9 aircraft were involved of which 3 did not return

Thanks for that. Yes I've got the three losses. I don't have them operating off Dieppe, but wondered if they'd carried out reconnaissance patrols in the western Channel. So it looks like they only took part in the UK raid. |
