Re: Photos 9-15
Hi All
Anyone who has an idea which unit or even which pilot in JG 51 who flow this one? http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=290160094587 The unit signs are confusing, since the gun-slinging Mickey is supposed to be with 1./JG 51 while the raven with a cold is supposed to have been II./JG 51 or 5th or 6th St. Cheers Stig |

Hi,
at the early stage of war it was Mickey Mous on blue disk. It disappeared in late 1940. Robert |

Re: Photos 9-15
Hello Robert.
There is 2 things 1/_ the staffel insignia of the 1./ JG 51 introduced by Douglas Pitcairn represented by the Micky Maus of the 3./J 88 (the last one) in a blue circle. When Douglas Pitcairn was replaced by H-F Joppien the 5th august 40 at the head of the 1./ JG 51, the new commander keep the insignia but add a white line surrounding the blue circle. 2/_ the insignia on the 109 of Fözö is the remembering of the legion Condor with the size as it was on the 109 in Spain, At the iniative of Schmoller-haldy a pin was created for the pilots who served at the 3./ J 88. Some of them as Fözö, Schmoller-Haldy or Hubertus von Bonin continued to paint the Micky Maus in their 109 during 1940. Thank you Ps: If someone can help me for my book about this subject he will be welcomed

Re: Photos 9-15
Hi Many,
the white outline was already in October 1939 (take a look at photo no.317 in Prien`s JFV Part 2). I think this emblem has 2 versions already as it was introduced. E.g. white 13 of Baer had emblem without this white outline. Regards Robert |

Re: Photos 9-15
Hello Robert.
I have seen what you mean, But the white 5 of Joppien had also a big surrounding white line. Also in October , even, if the official insignia was without the big white line surrounding the insignia. It is probable that Helmut Maul in white 12 was the wingman to Joppien. The only thing I am sure that the official insignia was without the white surrounding the insignia and when Joppien replaced Douglas Pitcairn at the head of 1./ JG 51 the insignia changed with the add of the white line.

Re: Photos 9-15
Hi,
so you mean Mickey Mous not the disk? The problem is that I saw only few photos (white 2,7,13) taken in late summer 1940. Regards Robert |
