Italian sea, night of september 16 1943

Hello friends, on the night of september 19 1943, a twin engined plane was shot down near Piombino, italy. Two crewman was rescued still alive by the germans, sgt Eric Wilson and sgt Douglas Salt. Thank also to the post of Laurent Rizzotti (Orbs online) i was able to identify the plane as the Vickers Wellington "X" belonging to the 458 Sqn RAAF.
With my friend Giampiero Vaccaro, of Piombino, we are trying to find more about Douglas Salt, wich was the sole survivor after the death of Sgt. Wilson, dead one month after the crash due to his severe injuries. Someone can suggest us the fate of the sgt Salt, and more details about the mission? Thanks in advance

Mick

Hi Henk, the Piombino's hospital register says that the crash happened in the night between 16 and 17, Eric Wilson died just a month after the crash, on 16 september. The plane has beeen hit by the A/A gun of the ships in Piombino harbour. Thanks!

Hello Mick,
Was out of town for some days and couldn't response earlier.
I asked "16" or "19" because in the title is mentioned "16" and in the text "19".
458 Squadron lost Wellington Mk.XIII serial MP723 in the night 16/17-9-1943 (missing off Corsica).
There is a Sgt D.A.E. Salt, RAF 1207305, in the PoW-Register: Camp 7A, PoW-number 269955.
Camp 7A was at Moosburg (Isar), Germany.
Regards from Holland where the beautiful Indian Summer finally ended and the fall arrived.
Henk.
