426th NFS claim on 29 October 1944
Hello,
Captain Robert R. Scott and r/o Flight Officer Charles W. Phillips claimed a Lily during a mission between 21:00-22:45 on 29/10/44 at a location stated as 10m NW A-2. Is there anyone, who knows where A-2 is located (presumably in the CBI)? Best regards/Håkan

According to this link: https://www.cbi-theater.com/backseat/backseat.html
A-2 was located in the Chengtu (China) area. It may have been the main Chengtu airfield (which no longer exists): https://ww2db.com/facility/Chengdu_Airfield/ |

Re: 426th NFS claim on 29 October 1944
Hi Rolland. A-2 was Chengdu and there was a complex of B-29 fields nearby (p.67 this link).
A-1 Hsingching A-3 Kwanghan A-5 kiunglai A-7 Pengshan ..........also 5 fighter bases. Chengdu chosen mainly for availability of labour. The 426th was to defend them (as detachments) and protect the B-29s. Their main base until moving to China as a squadron in November was Madhaiganj in Bengal (India). Re: 426th NFS claim on 29 October 1944
A bit more detail. Capt. Scott recounted the action in Kenn Rust's "Fourteenth AF story", they flew to A-1 Hsinching, Ground Control gave a contact 40 m. away (could be NW Chengdu); they found and shot down an un-identified twin-engine aircraft. Confirmed as destroyed in Study 85; the first 426th victory from a total of 9. The relatively low score shows the decreasing air activity and they flew more intruder missions.
After arriving from India they were to have 6 P-61s at Chengdu and 6 at Liuchow but they had to abandon the latter on Nov.7 due to the big Jap offensive south in E. China and the flight went to Chengdu. Scott and Phillips were awarded a half-share each. Regards Nick |
