Help identifying airman lost over Norway 1944

Hi,

I have purchased a portrait of a flier who was killed on the 14.08.1944 over Norway.

I don't have much more information other than he was possibly the pilot of a FW200 Condor.

I do not have his full name - just a first name possibly?

Have provided image.

Any help would be extraordinary!

Rick

Re: Help identifying airman lost over Norway 1944

Rick

The two Condor pilots killed that day were Oblt Rudolf Biberger b 8.12.1921 and Uffz Hellmut Meyer b.27.10.1920. The writing seems to roughly translate as ' My small way to the remembrance of ' then a word I cannot make out . Grossenhain around 15-9-1941 was home to Aufklarungsschule 1 training long range Recon. pilots , is the writing relating to the date of the photo or a loss that day ?

Hi Brian,

There are two separate bits of writing - one that you translated that refers to the photo and then a separate notation about his loss on the 14.08.44 as a pilot falling in Norway.

Does that help?

Rick

Hi,

In the phot odated 15.09.41 he is seen as a Flieger.

Could he have been promoted to Uffz. by 1944?

Entirely possible he would have been promoted to Uffz . As far as I can see from what I have from a list of losses in Norway Biberger's Condor was the only complete loss on 14th August 1944 . The only other was a He 115 C of 1/406 damaged 20 % . I copied your attached document so could read the notes at the top which as you say shows pilot lost in Norway which makes Uffz Hellmut Meyer born 27.10.1921 a likely candidate for the airman you seek ,

Brian

Re: Help identifying airman lost over Norway 1944

Hi,

Step is an abbreviation for the first name Stephanie.
The writing means that Hellmut (Flieger Hellmut Meyer) had dedicated the photo to his little Step.
Literally translated "To my little Step as a reminder from Hellmut Grossenhain, 15.9.41".

Leo
