Adolf 'Addi' Glunz

Am curious as to why a book has not been written about Glunz. Is it simply a lack of information?

He is a fascinating character. Glunz was in the thick of things from 1941 onwards and managed to avoid both being shot down and suffering any injuries in combat. A very rare feat.

I've just re-read 'I Flew For The Führer' (for the umpteenth time). Heinz Knoke and Addi's career seem very similar in timeline and operational Theatre. But whereas Addi survived unscathed, poor Knoke did indeed suffer through the war, with several times being shot down, various wounds and a career ending car crash courtesy of a Partisan bomb.

Re: Adolf 'Addi' Glunz

I do not think it is a lack of information as his Flugbuch 18 Apr 39-4 Feb 45 exists and has even been copied and bound. Just that nobody has felt the need to write about one of a number of such pilots. One could ask the same question about others

I think the key problem is, that for most all is available is a list of victories and similar stuff. There is very little in terms of narratives or personality. You can list basic events but not cover the person as such.

Re: Adolf 'Addi' Glunz

It's not a book, but issue 16 of the "Ritterkreuzträger Profile" magazine is dedicated to Adolf Glunz. It's authored by Ralf Schumann, and its 48 pages contain the following:
  • Short accounts of his service in JG 52, JG 26, and JG 7.
  • Many photos of Glunz and his fellow pilots and commanders.
  • Photos and color profiles of some of his aircraft.
  • His Abschussliste.
  • Lists of his awards (plus photos), promotions, units, and aircraft flown.
  • A couple of pages on his post-war exploits as a race car driver.
A handy resource, as are most of the other Luftwaffe-related issues in this series.

Hope that helps,
Leon Venter

Re: Adolf 'Addi' Glunz

Apologies if I'm repeating myself but I think a useful approach is to ask yourself "Why wouldn't I write such a book?"

The list might include reasons like: lack of time, lack of sources, lack of confidence, never wrote anything of that length, not speaking a particular language, couldn't afford the necessary travel, didn't think many people would be interested and so on. And if those occur to you, there's a fair chance they've occurred to potential authors too.

Re: Adolf 'Addi' Glunz

Hello,

Many years ago I had contact with Erik Bakker who had a lot of stuff and knowledge of Adolf Glunz. Whether he is pursueing a publication or not I do not know and I don't have his address either.

Best regards, Marcel

Hello Marcel,

Unfortunately, Eric-Jan Bakker passed away a few years ago after a battle with cancer.

Cheers,

Re: Adolf 'Addi' Glunz

One of the key reasons why there is a book on Knoke was that he wanted a book to be done, writting most of it or even all of it. It was probably not the case for Glunz.

Most of the books on German pilots during WII are actually personnal memories (Knoke, Galland, Rall, Dahl, Lipfert, Rudel, Schuck...) or are about the most "bankable" pilots (Marseille and Hartmann).

I believe Eric-Jan Bakker sold or gave most of his collection of originals to other collectors. I think this also included Glunz's orginal FB, but I am not sure. Eric-Jan passed away on 15.11.2017, 53 years old
