Anything published about 4/9/1939?
My question about the first Luftwaffe victory over the RAF on September 4, 1939 was kindly answered on this Forum. Thank you.
The events of September 4, 1939 were important on any reckoning. RAF's Plan W.A.7(A) was implemented. There was a PR Blenheim sortie. Wellingtons attacked Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Bunsbuettelkoog losing two. A Wellington bombed Esbjerg in Denmark killing a Dane. Ten Blenheims attacked shipping in the Schillig Roads and Wilhelmshaven losing 5. Five Blenheims got lost and returned, as did ten Hampdens including two piloted by Guy Gibson and Leonard Snaith.
The problems the RAF were to experience throughout WWII were present on that day; problems of navigation, of LW fighter defence, of Flak, of lack of impact on the enemy war machine while suffering heavy loss. The Luftwaffe could also identify the problems that it would have to contend with during the next six years.
My question is this: has anyone published anything dedicated to the events of that day? And if not, is anyone planning to publish?
I know of Michael J.F. Bowyer's '2 Group RAF', and items on websites such as the Norton Lancaster Museum, and passing mentions in books such as John Terraine's' The Right Of The Line'.
I don't mean such minor mentions. I mean, has anyone published a study of what happened in detail on both sides, and what conclusions could be drawn from those events about the equipment, the training and the operational aims of the RAF and of the Luftwaffe as they joined battle?
