Fw200 lost 14/8/42

Whilst looking at the 1st Fighter Group website I came across the claim for one Condor shotdown over Iceland on the 14th August 1942 by Lt's Shahan and Schafer. Does anybody know if there is a corresponding loss?

Regards,

Steve

Hi.

Abowe incident has more to it and here are more details, compiled from many sources, including plots and diaries from AAF Sources.

0125 Fw 200 C-4 ( ) NT+BY Luftwaffe - F8+BB Stab.I/KG 40 (Norway) OPS (Recce) Iceland area: First observed by RAF Northrop N-3PB of 330 (Norwegian) Squadron near convoy South of Grindavík, then flew North over the peninsula West of Reykjavík, intercepted and damaged by an USAAF P-39D of 33 FS (2/Lt Joseph D.R. Shaffer) and finally shot down at 11:15 hrs by two USAAF P-38F of 27 FS/1 FG (Major John W. Weltman and Lt. Elza E. Shahn) exploded and fell into sea (Faxaflói Bay) ´about´ 8 MLS NW of Grótta Point (Reykjavík), Iceland 14.08.1942 (F Ofw. Fritz Kühn, Ofw. Phillip Haisch, Ofw. Ottmar Ebner, Uffz. Wolgang Schulze, Ofw. Arthur Wohlleben and Ofw. Albert Winkelmann killed) - Wreckage was found at the time but details are curretly not available - One prop caught in fishing nets by fishing boat AUDBJÖRG and handded over to Icelandic CAA for examination - Privately preserved by ower in Kopavogur, Iceland from April 1998) - Prop now stored at the IAHS (Workshop/Museum) Hangar 24 at Reykjavik Airport for its owner from 2005 -

Actually the IAHS hangar is only some 100 meters away from the very spot these pilots were awarded medals for the shootdown by General Bonesteel (US Army)!

cheers

Ed, thanks for the detail. I believe this was the first USAAC claim against the Luftwaffe and was followed by the first claim in the ETO five days later.

Steve

Hi;

There was one claim before (an damaged Fw190), if I remember correctly ... but yes the first confirmed Luftwaffe downed in ETO.

as per Frank Olynik (?): ´Credits for the destructions´.... listings have all details. He is member here on this forum I think (sorry if I misspell his name).

Re: Fw200 lost 14/8/42

Hi;

Thanks John, just one letter off ...

BTW the Condor crew managed to damage one of the P-38F´s, (#28 , cn. 5728) one bullet hitting nose ammo tray/M.G. belt-feed chute and it had to pull out of the action. However one Icelandic eyewitness stated in interview to me that one fighter ´was downed and dived into the sea off the coast of Vatnsleysuströnd´ but no record has surfaced to that effect. Any known 1 FG loss for that date?

cheers
