Ju88 that parachuteless tail gunner Nicholas Alkemade shot down
Any Luftwaffe records confirming the Ju88 that Nicholas Alkemade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Alkemade says in his autobiography that he shot down on 24-3-44 just before bailing out at 18,000' without a parachute, one of the war's very few Nachtjager losses to RAF nightbomber guns.

Re: Ju88 that parachuteless tail gunner Nicholas Alkemade shot down
Alkemade's Lancaster was shot down by Heinz Roekker, so I would assume that he claimed (erroneously) to have downed Roekker's Ju88 before he jumped.

Re: Ju88 that parachuteless tail gunner Nicholas Alkemade shot down
Was Roekker's Ju88 damaged as per Alkemade?
"We were somewhere over the Ruhr when suddenly a series of shuddering crashes raked our aircraft from nose to tail, then two terrific thunderclaps as two cannon shells exploded on my turret ring mounting. The plexiglass blister shattered and vanished—one large fragment slicing into my right leg. Luckily my turret had been facing astern. I quickly depressed my guns and stared out. Not more than fifty yards from me was the shadowy outline of a Junkers 88 fighter, his leading edge a line of brilliant white flashes as he blazed away at our wounded ship. I aimed point-blank and squeezed the trigger of my four banked 303 Brownings. They fired simultaneously and the Junkers was transfixed by four streams of fiery tracers. He peeled off, his port engine trailing flame. I did not watch to see his fate; I was too concerned about my own." |
