Attack on the airfield at Kursk-West
On 30May42 at 07:15(Moscow) Il-2's attacked the airfield at Kursk-West. On leaving the LaGG-3 escorts were engaged by "Messerschmitt" Bf 109's and suffered two lost. I looked through the JG units and found no claims for the German time except IV/JG51 which was around Rzhev to the north. Were the Rumanians stationed there with their 109's or maybe the Italians with Macchi C.202's? Are maybe one the German ground-support units equiped with Bf 109E's?

Re: Attack on the airfield at Kursk-West
Hi Nokose,
I./JG.53 had just arrived from Prague with new Bf.109Fs for it´s second deployment on the Eastern, based from 29.5.42 - 24.6.42 at Kursk. Apparently it´s arrival was reported by partisans and led to air attacks. BTW, from which unit were the Il-2s? |

Re: Attack on the airfield at Kursk-West
I./JG53 were stationed at Kursk-East and according to Prien's JFV 9/III didn't achieve any victories until the day (31st) after the raid. The six Il-2 from the 800 ShAP didn't suffer any losses.
