53 Sqn Losses Battle of Britain
I have obtained 6 photos of crashed Blenheims in the Pas de Calais. 4 are described as 'bei Pihen, 3 tote' and 2 from a crash at Freythun-53 Sqn codes are clear and the last 2 figures or the serial appear to be 89 or 98. The only candidates are 11 Aug 40 (T1816 to JG 52) but I have a cine-film showing this one; 8 Oct 40 (T2036 reputed near Frethun): 27 Oct 40(L8789 but reputed in the sea). Any thoughts?

Re: 53 Sqn Losses Battle of Britain
Not sure if this helps but I have Blenheim L8789/J returning from on an attack on a canal near Amsterdam on 7 July 1940. The pilot was unable to find Detling in bad weather and he landed on the disused airfield at Ramsgate, the aircraft was damaged when it hit several anti-invasion obstructions.
The above details are taken from 'United In Effort' - Jock Manson. |

Re: 53 Sqn Losses Battle of Britain
Hi Chris,
I have a note to say that the suggestion of L8789 crashing into the sea comes from the recovery of a parachute and flying jacket by a HSL coupled with the lack of known graves. T2036 Shot down by flak and crashed at Frethun, 5 km south west of Calais, at 22:45 hrs would seem the best fit. Regards Ross |
