Re: Hell Above Earth
"Hell Above Earth tells an unforgettable story of two World War II American bomber pilots who forged an unexpected but enduring bond in the flak-filled skies over Nazi Germany. But there's a twist: one of them was related to the head of the Luftwaffe, Reich Marshal Herman Goering, and the other had secret orders from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, to kill him if anything went wrong during their missions.A heart-wrenching Greatest Generation buddy story, an adrenaline-filled account of aerial combat, and a work of popular history, Hell Above Earthcenters around the author's discovery of a half-century old secret that has far-reaching and deeply personal repercussions for the pilots, and profound consequences for the FBI and the "Mighty" Eighth Air Force."
I think this is kind of fantasy, I do not think in WWII FBI had jurisdiction over army, so how BI Director J. Edgar Hoover could have some army officer killed “if anything went wrong during their missions”? I know many think Hoover was a classic SOB and FBI under his command did some dirty work, but FBI in its worst still never degrades itself to the same level of Gestapo or NKVD. And besides, even Gestapo or NKVD would not send an air force pilots to the front, and then assign someone to keep an eye to him and kill him if “anything went wrong during their missions”, what was the logic behind this assignment? they would arrest him already if they suspect his loyalty Last edited by mars; 7th February 2012 at 17:45. |

Re: Hell Above Earth
I cannot say for certain. However, the FBI did have an international presence during World War II through its Special Intelligence Service, of which only one book of which I am aware exists. The Origins of FBI Counterintelligence by Raymond J. Batvinis.
Apparently, all intelligence services were involved in the war, including the shadowy Counter-Intelligence Corps which is far less documented than the OSS. Ed |

Re: Hell Above Earth
Of course FBI involved in the WWII, but this did not change the fact that FBI did not have jurisdiction over army, if an US army officer committed treason, he would be tried by US military tribunal, something like Hoover could bypass US army chain of command, and issued order directly to an US army officer and basically gave him a check blank to kill another US army officer "if anything went wrong in a mission", that was pure fantasy.
