WNr. 464534 at "Greif"

Hi Gents,

W.Nr. 464 534 from III./KG(J) 55, said by Janowicz 2008 to have been found at Greif.

Where is/was GREIF situated please?
Thank you.

Regards, Franck.

PS: Or is it a typo to talk about the KG(J) 55 "Greif" emblem???

Re: WNr. 464534 at "Greif"

@ Franck,

for there's obvisously no German village or town to find, i believe the word Greif means "Griffin". So this possibly could mean either "Griffin" as a unit emblem or states the code-name for Heinkel He 177.

Cheers
Norbert

Could it be short for Greifswald ?

Re: WNr. 464534 at "Greif"

Hello Thanks,
This is a Bf109.
I just think there is a misunderstanding. Maybe the author talked about "KG(J)55 Greif" the same way one talk about "JG 54 Grünherz". The emblem being effectively a "Greif" or whatever the name in German.

But the way the caption is written ... KG(J) 55 Greif, May 9145 .. and so on..

Cheers, Franck.

Re: WNr. 464534 at "Greif"

Franck and Brian,

now it's more clrearer! Must be the insignia of KG (J) 55 as it simply shows a red griffin with black wing in a red or black outlined white shield (early version red griffin with black shape and no shield). See as reference: Ketley & Rolfe Luftwaffen Embleme. KG 55 switched over from bomber a/c to fighter planes in late stages of WW2 and emblem was kept unmodified (as far as i know).

Best Regards
Norbert
