Re: 233 Sqn on 10.1.40
From former post secondary source :
"On 10th January 1940 Flying Officer McLaren, with Pilot Officer Evans as second Pilot, attacked a Heinkel 111. After two front gun attacks its undercarriage dropped half down and the rear guns were silenced. After all the front gun ammunition had been shot away he climbed above the Heinkel and dropped two 250 pound anti-submarine bombs on it from about 100 feet above but these both missed. They then attacked with several free gun beam and quarter attacks until the turret hydraulic system failed, making it impossible to train the guns, and the action had to be broken off. The Hudson expended 1,500 rounds of ammunition and was hit by eleven bullets from the Heinkel" |

Re: 233 Sqn on 10.1.40
From Christopher Shores' "Fledgling Eagles" p.158 :
"9-10/1-40 ... One of the Stab/KG 26 aircraft was intercepted during its return flight by a patrolling Hudson of 233 Squadron, the British aircraft at once attacking and expending all its ammunition before breaking off the combat. The Heinkel was hit 20-30 times but was able, with the undercarriage shot-up, to crash-land, suffering 25% damage...." |
