Bf 109G-2 10422

Hi Guys

Does anyone have any further information on this aircraft?

Here is all I have so far...

Bf l09G-2 built by Erla in August 1942.
Probably shot down May 13, 1943 whilst with 2./JG 5.

TIA
Dave

Not much to add:
Damaged 60% in a take-off accident 13.May 1943 at Alakurtti. Pilot (uninjured) not named. I have it listed as II/JG 5, not 2. Staffel

Interesting, many thanks. This may well explain why this wk.nr was also partially visible on the weathered tail of 14798 (my other query). It may have been parted out and the tailfin used as a replacement on that aircraft at some stage.
Remnants of paint show a desert theatre finish. Actually when the wreck of 14798 was recovered in the nineties, an African beetle was discovered (long dead of course!), so at least one of these G-2s may well have served in Nth Africa...

regards
Dave

Re: Bf 109G-2 10422

Hello Dave,

as for your Werknummer 10422 I found this information:

Sometimes between 11. and 20. April 1943 a pilot of Luftzeuggruppe Belgien/Nordfrankreich transfered the a/c from Antwerpen to Gutenfeld to be handed over to Luftflotte 5. I presume, the plane had being repaired at Erla-Antwerpen (source: MAMA Freiburg).

13. Mai 1943 damaged 60% in accident at Alakurtti with 4. JG 5 (source: GQM)

Reported 11. June 1943 at Reparaturwerk Kjeller, due to be finished 9. February 1944 (source: ADI (K) 205/44).

Reported 18. November 1944 at Kjevik with Fliegerzielstaffel 50 (source: Ultra HW 5/622).

HTH

Re: Bf 109G-2 10422

Almost all Bf109G-2 of this WNr range were used by JG 54, many repaired planes of which ended with JG 5.
Rare examples were used by JG 27 and JG 77. Maybe WNr 10422 went this way. But the use of "exotic" paint combinations by JG 54 must not be overllooked...

Regards

Roland

Thanks, interesting.

Re the insect, this is all I have:

"subsequent study of the radiator oil located a crushed , but well preserved beetle . The insect was removed and sent the Polar Biological Institute where it was determined that this type of insect was only found in Africa"

Re: Bf 109G-2 10422

JG 5 got a lot of 'hand me downs' for aircraft. Looks like the 11-Jul-43 loss, if correct, may not have been a total loss.

Matti,

Thanks again - I actually had both entries for Schmeider, but had not noticed the duplicate until you pointed out the entry for WNr. 10418.
