Identity of Bf109 landed at Jsium

Dear forum members!

This photo was scanned by me from a well known for every photo collector image series "1st mountain division service time in Russia".

I appreciate some background information concerning this Bf109 photo that is only Luftwaffe related image in entire photo album.

- what variant of Bf109 is this?
- what group of JG 52 is this?
- any information concerning its pilot's fate or name?

The photo dated June 25th, 1941 and was taken in Ukraine at the city of Izium.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Alexander

Re: Identity of Bf109 landed at Jsium

Hi Alexander,
It could be Bf 109 F-2 WNr. 8202 of 6./JG52 that made a crash landing at Sobolewo on 24-Jun-41. The fuselage band was unique to II./JG 52 during this time period. II./JG 52 was not operating in the Ukraine but in Lithuania during this time period given by you. So maybe the location you quote may be incorrect, It your location is correct then my assessment is incorrect.

Regards,
Norbert

This looks like the Bf 109 F-2 "Black 11" of 5./JG 52 - note the Staffel's Rabatz emblem in the miniature form on the aircraft engine cowling.

Re: Identity of Bf109 landed at Jsium

Suspect misspelling for Izyum (Isjum as it is spelled in German) and a date with a very misleading typo. Locate Izyum on map of eastern Ukraine, then locate II./JG 52 base for 25 June 1942. Date 25 June 1941 makes no sense, but 25 June 1942 makes big sense.

Thank you Larry, that makes sense. It is then a Bf 109 F-4 WNr. 7098 of 5./JG 52 that made a crash landing on 24-Jun-42 being damaged 35%.

Norbert

Many thanks for information! I am very sorry for the typo with a date - correct one is 25 JUNE 1942 indeed!

Norbert,

Do you confirm that Schwarze 11 was WNr.7098? Source? I had it (Schwarze 11) in Charkov-Kessel from secondary source.
What about WNr.8202? Gelbe 6?

Regards, Franck.

Re: Identity of Bf109 landed at Jsium

Hi Frank,
it is the only Bf 109 reported as being damaged around this time (2 days) that could fit. The other one of 5./JG 52 is a 100% loss on 26-Jun-42. The source is Gen.Qu.6.Abt. but individual letter was not reported. I just made this connection. BTW the same photo is published in Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutschen Luftwaffe by Prien et all Teil 9/II page 459. WNr. 8202 was lost in 1941!

Regards,
Norbert
