U-2 shot down over Petsamo

Hi guys

On the Luftwaffe Nordic Claims website, I note that a Soviet U-2 is credited to a pilot of 1./JG77 as being shot down on 25 June 1941 in the Petsamo area. Was this aircraft based at Petsamo?

I'd not spotted this entry previously.

Any further information, please?

Cheers
Brian

Re: U-2 shot down over Petsamo

Hello!

Not likely. Petsamo was part of Finland then (1941).

Re: U-2 shot down over Petsamo

Hi guys

Thanks Kari

Latest information suggests that the U-2 biplane was shot down by a Bf109 near Schonguy airfield, south of Murmansk, and not over Petsamo!

Cheers
Brian

Re: U-2 shot down over Petsamo

That makes more sense - Petsamo being a German airfield and Murmansk/Schonguj being well and truly Soviet territory.

According to http://eismeerjager.livejournal.com/921.html

Mladshiy Leytenant Pavel Ashmarin of 147 IAP went missing this day aboard an U-2 flying from Ura-Guba airfield to Schonguy airfield and was allegedly shot down by enemy fighters.
