LW losses over Nurenberg on 16 April 1945
Dear friends,
please, who has more details about the air-to-air losses on 16 April 1945 over Bavaria? One Bf 109 crashed near Kirchenthumbach, two others near Heuberg (both locations are close Nürnberg/Nurenberg, North Bavaria). Perhaps all three events, or one of them, are related to the claims of Capt. Ernest E. Bankey Jr. of 364. FG (according to the 8th AF Intops Summary, he shot down two Bf 109s over Deinengen airfield / according to Frank Olynyk: at 16.40 he shot down two Bf 109s over Nordingen A/F) Do these events correspond to any known losses on the Luftwaffe? Thanks, Jan |

Re: LW losses over Nurenberg on 16 April 1945
Hello,
Kirchenthumbach is more then 70 km from Nüremberg (NE) away! Heuberg is near the anicent City of Nördlingen also over 50km from Nüremberg (SE). I thing Nordingen must be the City of Nördlingen. Mybe the 109 are from JG 300. h. |

my inattention, now I see it on the map. Nördlingen-Deiningen is one Flugplatz, and the small village of Heuberg is nearby, thank you.
In April based there part of JG 104, EJG 1 and maybe JG 300 too. but what two planes were shot down here on April 16? |

Ay caramba, spelling is either Nuremberg or Nuernberg (with an umlaut).

Re: LW losses over Nurenberg on 16 April 1945
I looked in Michael Balss' book Luft losses and claims for 1st April-9th May 1945 but could not link to the locations given through Google Earth :-
6/JG 53 lost a 109 K4 t/o Risstissen crashed Schorndorf Elements of EJG 1 operated from Gorlitz well to the north lost 6 109 various models II/JG 77 up frm Eckersdorf lost 3 109 K4s in aerial combat with 2 in the Troppau area The airfield at Raffelding Ausrtia lost 4 109 G10s of Ung.St./101 crashing around the airfield in combat with P-51s . There is a Heuberg in Austria 130kms to the S/W by Salzberg On a site there are some combat reports from P-51 units which includes Capt Bankey for the 27th Dec. 1944 but not for the 16th April I was hoping there would be one to confirm the airfield where his combats took place . Could find any losses for JG 300 from Balss or other sources and none from JG 104 . |
