Looking for fate of Junkers W34 CA+VM

Hello all,

I'm trying to figure out what happened to this specific a/c assigned to Seenotzentrale XII at Mamaia in Romania. It arrived at Mamaia at the beginning of September 1941 and it appears for some years in their inventory and then all of a sudden there is no more mention of it. Is there any way to establish if it was a hydroplane variant? WNr. is 2867

Re: Looking for fate of Junkers W34 CA+VM

Not much I have. One of 35 Junkers W 34 hi (W.Nr. 2866 to 2895) probably from parts supplied by B&V, NDW, AFW and MIAG (if I interpret doc correctly) Ref: Jfm document

2867 W 34 D-OMYS (Known flown 28.08.35 by Wilhelm Zimmermann JFM)

2867 W 34 hi 8./Seenotstaffel (Luftflotte 4 East)
Non-OPS (H) storm damage (25% Er) at Palas 15.06.1942 (GQM. lists)

Thanks Tom for the confirmation, there's a very big chance that this specific Ju W 34 was located this weekend in a lake close to its home base, will keep you posted on updates.

Re: Looking for fate of Junkers W34 CA+VM

If the planes has been lost in 1944, without pers. casualties, a very few chance to found it in the papers, better way is to sound the lakes....

nd indeed you found it

That's what i was thinking also Remi, that it was either lost or sunk during the german retreat in 1944, if it was sunk by the soviets then even less chances of finding something documented from both sides.

Re: Looking for fate of Junkers W34 CA+VM

That is indeed surprizing news, very good, I hope it is in such a condition to be salvageable and restorable. Not many Ju W 34 still around - of 2,308* produced - only three complete ones exist, the 2718 CF-ATF in Canada, the 2823 "407" in Columbia and the 2835 SE-BYA in Sweden. Am I missing out on some more? *own figure. Subject to change if better info comes to light.

I have it most/all W 34 could be "(see)" variant, as it was multi purpose aircraft - skis, floats or wheels, only matter of fitting the floats, and the larger vertical fin/rudder. The W 34 hi had BMW 132 A engines.

Tom, you write confusing. Was this two "batches" 2867 to 2869 (3 aircraft) and 2884 to 2886 (3 aircraft) or only these four W.Nr.´s (2867, 2869, 2884 and 2886)

Re: Looking for fate of Junkers W34 CA+VM

Hi Ed

Not intentional I asure you. I have no confirmation that these odd 4 W34hi(see) were among a batch that were built (converted) with floats. I can only go by the Units that operated them
2867 - 8./Seenotstaffel
2869 - Seenotbereichskdo.XII
2884 - Est Travemunde - FFS(B)17
2886 - BFL(See)Schleswig

Possible (See) conversions for

2870 - LDK 62
2875 - Luftgau-Stab Finland
2876 - LDK 64

Regards
Tom
