On 27 November 1997, a group of building workers clearing land for development at South Bank, Cleveland, UK, unearthed the remains of Do217E-4 of 8./KG2. The aircraft had crashed there in January 1942, minutes after being hit by marine gunfire and seconds after colliding with the cable of a barrage balloon. Bodies of three of the crew were recovered at the time: the fourth was found on 27 November 1997.
This book tells the full story of the bomber's last sortie. It also describes the chance discovery in 1997 and the subsequent interment of the fourth crew member in a ceremony attended by the German Consul-General to Great Britain, the German Air Attachè, three local mayors, representatives of twenty-two ex-Servicemen's Associations and some 200 members of the general public. Available from bookshops or direct from me, the author.
