US Navy Collision November 24, 1930
On November 24, 1930 two Boeing F4B's of VB-1B came into collision
off Point Loma, CA These were A-8154 and A-8155. One pilot was killed the other saved his life by parachute - I am trying to identify what pilot was on what plane? I have a report Both pilots jumped with parachutes from the locked and spinning machines, getting clear of the wreckage before they pulled their ripcords. Their parachutes floated them safely to the water. Lt jg Pfinstag (Carl Jesse Pfingstag) was almost immediately fished out but there was some delay in getting to Ensign Burkhart (John Philip Burkhart USNR (Maine) aged 24), who appeared to have been stunned and may have become entangled in his parachute. His parachute opened too "slowly". He was drowned The collision occurred when the two were enroute back to North Island from gunnery exercises which were held off La Jolla Pfingstag was one of 3 brothers all who became Captains in the US Navy Herbert John Pfingstag, Carl Jesse Pfingstag, and Paul William Pfingstag went on to graduate from the United States Naval Academy and, at the time of World War II, became Captains. At the time, they were known as the first 3 brothers ever to be Captains at the same time in the US Navy |

Re: US Navy Collision November 24, 1930
Pfingstag was in A8154, Burkhardt in A-8155. They were returning from a gunnery exercise with Pfingstag towing a banner.
