Vichy pilots to fight with Luftwaffe?

Hi guys

The following passage is extracted from a website. Is this basically correct?

"The French World War I air ace, Colonel Rene Fonck, had organized some two hundred Vichy French pilots who were prepared to join Germany in the fight against Britain."

Cheers
Brian

Re: Vichy pilots to fight with Luftwaffe?

Brian,

The passage can be found on more websites, but this one seems to offer a little background on the political games then played: http://www.reachinformation.com/defi...%A9_Fonck.aspx

Go to the chapter "After the War".

Regards,

Leendert

Re: Vichy pilots to fight with Luftwaffe?

It may be a confusion with another French WWI ace, général Armand Pinsard, who was in charge to recruit volunteers for the LVF - Ligue des Volontaires Français - to fight alongside the Germans in Russia (but on foot not in the air).
Fonck, like many of his likes, certainly played a double-cross rôle at the time but he was cleared after the war. I had never heard he wanted to raise a kind of "Legion Condor" à la française.
