Cool Luftwaffe personnel records

Hello everyone,

I recall from earlier posts on the this subject that the personnel records of Luftwaffe servicemen were moved from Aachen to Freiburg.

I will be visiting the BA-MA later this month, and hope someone who's been there recently can help me with some questions:

- Are the records open to the public? (I'm aware of the restrictions on access to personal information)
- If they are, does anyone know how they are categorized?
- Would I be able to access any files just with the name of a serviceman?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
Andre

Re: Luftwaffe personnel records

Andre: I am still not sure what the exact situation is but I put a request to WASt exactly a year ago, with the signed forms and stating my rank/status/author and am still waiting for their reply (despite hastening twice). However, I was assured last week that I would be getting a letter shortly; what it contains I am not sure but I am prepared to be disappointed!

Andre,

I got a personnel record from Freiburg after some months (I asked Aachen first but it happened approximately, when they moved these files to Freiburg) For a serious research I guess, they are always willing to help (it is evidently not a disadvantage, if they know you from earlier research and contacts).
The birth date (and place) is a great help, especially if the asked name is pretty common. If it is a rare one, I guess, they can find it without additional info.

To Chris / Csaba / Rob,

Thanks for your quick replies.

If I was physically present at BA-MA Freiburg and requested a personal record, would I be able to view the file, in much in the same way that I can call up and view other documents?

Andre

Re: Luftwaffe personnel records

Just a week short of a year and after much hastening, I have my reply from WASt. I am afraid no photocopies, EKM, date and place of birth just names, ranks, positions, ac details and if available fate typed out like at least 10 years ago. Still, something is much better than nothing!

Re: Luftwaffe personnel records

Hi, Andre

I would prepare this visit by contacting the person responsible for this Referat, as stated by the people at the readers room by my last visit, before I went there with details of my request.

I do not have a name at hand, but this should be quite easy to get by contacting the staff at the readers room by email.

Regards,
Andreas B
