Bf.110G-4 shot down on night 27/28th May 1944

Dear all,

Bf.110G-4 Wnr 140032 G9+CR of 7./NJG1 was lost in the night of 27/28th May 1944 and crashed at 01.15 hrs near Spannum, The Netherlands.

I've filed the crew as:
FF: Uffz TANK WIA
BF: Uffz Günter SCHRÖDER KIA
BS: Uffz ELWERS KIA

I hope someone can add details to crew, as I'm looking for the forename of Uffz Tank and I'm not sure about the name of Uffz Elwers, at least, I couldn't find a match on the site of the Volksbund.

Apart from that, this Bf.110 was shot down by the Mosquito F/Lt N. A. Reeves 239 Squadron.

Hope someone has more details about this Mosquito and crew, perhaps even a combat report!

Thanks in advance,
Hans Nauta

P.S. yes, I've checked Balss' work, but there is no entry for this loss in his book.

Hans:

I believe I have all on this crash as the Mossie was brought down by wreckage from the 110. You might like to contact me direct but I am away from home until Thursday. I have photos of the RAF crew and Mossie and contacted Tank...only to find he had died a month before

A quick reply. Joachim Tank and Heinz Elwers. Fg Off Paddy Bailey of 239 Sqn attacked a Bf 110 over Leeuwarden which resulted in an explosion and a shower of debris which hit his Mossie which then crashed at Renswoude at 0230 hrs local

Hans
A bit unfair to Balss
At least in my copy the crash is on page 282, top, in his first book

Cheers
Stig

Hi Stig,

Well, my copy is the Deutsche Nachtjagd - Materialverluste in Ausbildung und Einsatz & Ergänzungen zu Personalverlusten in Ausbildung und Einsatz, edition 1999.

The page you mentioned starts with 20th december 1943 in my copy.

Are we both referring to different editions perhaps?

Best regards,
Hans Nauta

Balss did two books, one on personnel losses, and one on material losses. I suspect each of you has one of the books.

Frank.

The "Personalverluste..."-book was printed in about only 1000 copies and is totally sold out.

But AFAIK, there are plans about a reprint with correctures and additions (source: M. Balss, 2006).

Regards,

Heuser

Re: Bf.110G-4 shot down on night 27/28th May 1944

Any resolution possible on which Mossie this was? I had 140032 down to Reeves, with Bailey claiming a Damaged in the same area.

I also had 140032 crewed by Uffz Joachim Tank (age 26, pilot), WIA, Uffz Ludwig Serwein (21, radar operator), and Gefr. Otto Morath (23, air gunner), both KIA.

Meh - edited for sources. "Confounding the Reich" by Martin Bowman lists the 110's crew as above, but says it came down at Aachen. "Fighter Command War Diaries" has it at Leeuwarden. Another source says Bailey's claim was 24/25 May...

Bailey's attack was definitely the same night that they baled out-although they did not see it crash, their attack resulted in an explosion and a shower of debris. Tank came down at Spannum (from memory) whilst I will have to check the NVM for the crew list when I am home tomorrow
