Stalag Luft III

I'm new to this forum so if everything doesn't happen the way it's
supposed to, bear with me.

Attached (I hope) is a copy of the Disney Studios insignia associated
with this famous POW camp. I have heard a half dozen stories concerning
the actual origin of the original concept but they all vary.

Can anyone out there provide me with a 'carved-in-stone' version as
to just who came up with the original (pre-Disney) idea for this design.
