Liberator AM259 / USSR A-20
The following page from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preproduction_B-24 gives the loss of B-24 Liberator AM259 on 5 January 1943 caused by a midair collision with a USSR A-20. Could someone please confirm this?
Any help appreciated Regards Peter. |

Re: Liberator AM259 / USSR A-20
Peter
This week Air Britain published "The Liberator in RAF and Commonwealth Service" by Oughton, Hamlin and Thomas ISBN 0 85130 362 5 see https://www.air-britain.co.uk/actboo...ew_Books_.html The book has quite a long entry for AM259 which confirms that it was re-registered as G-AGCD with BOAC on 19.4.41; the a/c made the first Prestwick/Moscow return flight on 21/29.10.42 and continued to be involved in Moscow flights during 1943; it was damaged in an accident at Prestwick on 15.5.43 but was repaired and returned to ferry and special operations; it was retired to the RAF on 6.7.44 and following service with 231Sqn was SOC on 7.11.45. It seems that if it did collide with a Russian A-20 then it was at Prestwick? Steve |
