Rudolf Sigmund - which aircraft?

On the night of 20-21 June 1942 Oblt Rudolf Sigmund shot down Stirling W7472 of No.7 Squadron. What type of aircraft was Sigmund flying at the time of this victory?

Any help appreciated.

Regards
Peter.

Re: Rudolf Sigmund - which aircraft?

Hi Peter,

I can acknowledge Chris' reply. Oblt Rudolf Sigmund and Uffz Hugo Bauer crewed a Bf.110, likely E-version R4+DC. The Werknummer may have been 2422, 2423 or 2475.

Perhaps somebody has an additional comment on these Werknummers?

I don't know if its of any interest, but I have a short account of one of the Flakbatteries on the Dutch coast who claimed this Stirling as well.

Best regards,
Hans Nauta

Chris - Hans,

Many thanks for your replies, and Hans, yes I would be interested in reading the account of the flakbatteries.

Regards
Peter.

Re: Rudolf Sigmund - which aircraft?

Hi Peter,

From the Kriegstagebuch Marine Artillerie Abteilung 201

02.10 hrs Bergen aan Zee/Camperduin
A Wellington (sic) passed from direction 2 to 9 (ENE-W) at 100 metres altitude and was engaged by 2./MAA201 with 9 rounds 2 cm Oerlikon and 15 rounds Dutch 12,7 mm. The aircraft returned fire. After the engagement the aircraft caught fire and crsahed into the sea in direction 9 at 3.650 metres distance. The fuel burned untill 03.12 hrs.

Although being claimed by this Flakbattery I believe the Stirling was shot up first by Oblt Sigmund.

What's your particulair interest in this crash?

Regards,
Hans Nauta

Re: Rudolf Sigmund - which aircraft?

Hi Hans,

Many thanks for the info, it will help in putting together a short history of the aircraft and its loss which is being compiled by a friend researching the names on his local War Memorial.

Best regards
Peter.
