Question about Me109 G14/AS

The Me 109 G14/AS built by Regensburg(780xxx) batchs has big radiator(Fo987) and large
prop(VDM 12197A) with diferent lower couling. How is it possible to have other types of "AS"
in the G14 block with the same engine(Db 605 ASM) with the old prop and small rediator,ie
built by Erla or WNF?

Eduardo.

Re: Question about Me109 G14/AS

There was another batch of "early" G-14/ASs built by Erla in the 460xxx-462xxx series, all recognizable by the standard lower nose cowling with flush surfaces.

Most, if not all the G-14/ASs built at Regensburg (identified here as "late"), had the lower cowl with the double "chin bulges", usually associated with the DB 605D engine. This modification wasn't due to any other technical factor than the fact that such cowls were available in quantities, since in Regensburg there were also the production lines of all the K-4s. In fact, the G-14/ASs had no need of those bulges, used in the DB 605D to accomodate two water return lines which protuded from the cowling's outline through a "slit" in the metal...

As a proof of that, there are several photographs of G-14/AS (recognizable by the lower oil filler cap due to the smaller "horseshoe" nose oil tank) showing the "chin-bulged" cowl open and no return piping where it should have been (nor any "slit")...

The differences could be summarized in this scheme:

Hope this helps.

Re: Question about Me109 G14/AS

Thanks a lot!!!

But what about the props? Why they were diferent with the same engine?

Eduardo.

Re: Question about Me109 G14/AS

I'm not a technician nor an engineer, so I can only have guesses... maybe it was simply an issue of more availability of the newer propellers at the MTT-Regensburg, and the same could probably be applied also to the deeper Fo897 radiators.

Unless there were technical contraindications, I guess it was an advantage to be able to share such components between the G-14/AS and the K-4 on the production lines...

I repeat, only an educated guess as an explaination. The facts prove altogether that these details were applied also on the G-14/AS.

Re: Question about Me109 G14/AS

I know that for each engine you have a proper propeller. So is it possible that the old G-14AS built by Erla don´t have the MW-50???
Remember that the "AS" with the MW 50 had 1800HP which allowed the usege of a big prop.

Re: Question about Me109 G14/AS

I know for sure that there were several G-14s built at Erla devoid of MW-50... if this applied also the the "early" G-14/AS I don't know, but could be an hypothesis.

Re: Question about Me109 G14/AS

Yes.... but I discovered a photo of a G-14 built by Erla,(without the bulges and the big radiator) that uses the C-3 type fuel , which indicates
the use of a MW-50 system.

The 'big prop' was clearly meant for high altitude work with the /AS engines ie. high altitude engines. They were associated with high altitude types, wheter they had MW 50 or not. The low/medium alt. G-14 wheter with MW50 or not kept using the old prop as in G-1 through G-6.

As far as I know and have been told, Erla was responsible to produce some G-14s for training purposes, hence the lack of MW 50 boost in some planes (thx to Rasmussen for this info).
