Was not acropolis destroyed becaused used as a gun-powder warehouse by the venitians ???

The Ottoman turks thought the appropriate way to use an orthodox church ( as was the Parthenon at that time) was to store gun-powder inside during the siege of Athens in 1687.
A venetian cannonball hit the temple - the responsible gunner was a bavarian mercenary ![]() Regards Roland |

Hi Guys
Robert, also as an aside, the Venetians was under the command of the Swedish born Otto von Königsmarck and I still have not forgiven him... ![]() They don't make architects like Kallikrates or artists like Fidias any more ![]() I do believe however that in WW 2 both sides tried to avoid the Greek heritages as much as possible, and the triple A shown in the photo is actually some way from the hill itself in the old town of Athens Cheers Stig |
