Sgt G A Jones - gunner with 49 Squadron

Good night to all.
I am looking to positively identify the complete NAME of Sergeant G A JONES, a gunner with 49 Squadron who was shot down on the night of 29/30 March 1944 on Lancaster Mk III, serial number ED469, codes EA-A flown by F/O G F Mabee ( RCAF ).
I CAN NOT find his FULL name neither his RAF service number.
Any information on this field would be welcomed.
He survived the crash of his bomber and was heavily wounded. Accepted on a German Lazarett, IT SEEMS he was repatriated to UK. Could someone confirm this information?
Thanks a lot in advance on any information related to the above airman.
Yours
Adriano

Unconfirmed source: servicenumber Jones 1411530. It seems that he was severely injured, transferred to Res. Lazarett I in Hannover and pres. repatriated in 1944.

Henk.

Re: Sgt G A Jones - gunner with 49 Squadron

Hello HENK!I am glad that someone with knowledge knows the RAF Service Number of Sergeant G A Jones. However, I tried to find out more about this RAF Nº and got no joy. May I ask you from where you got this number? I do know, from your answers that you do have a vast knowledge on WW2 and about this particular airman.Yes, he was severely injured and sent to Lazarett 1 at Hannover; and I knew he was repatriated around the end of the war ( thought it was early in 1945 ).I do hope someone else can add a bit more...did he survive? Any family members available today? I still do not know his Christian name...Thanks for all those who contributed here, particularly Mr Henk!YoursAdriano

Adriano,

you should try sending a letter to :

Personnel Records Unit,
Library and Archives Canada,
395 Wellington Street,
Ottawa,
ON K1A 0N3

and ask for all or parts of F/O G F Mabee (RCAF) Service records, they may well contain lots of useful information and details of Jones christian names.

I have gotten lots of superb information from this source.

regards

Dennis

Hi Adriano,
Look at the 49 Sqn website, http://www.bomberhistory.co.uk/49squ...in%20Menu.html ,among the headings is a "Contact Us" and this gives access to e-mail links one of which is an Archivist. They may have the details you need. The a/c was shot down by a nightfighter on the crews 1st op , Berlin,29-30/Mar/43 according to Mabee's entry on the Roll of Honour.
Regards
Dick

Adriano: I will be able to confirm what you are after with the AHB but not until the end of this month so if you would like to remind me then, I will see what I can do (unless you have what you want in the interim)
Chris
