He 111s over Dieppe 19 Aug 42

Although 303 and 307 Sqns claimed 5 in the late afternoon and 175 Sqn one in the morning, I can only find one loss (A1+KT of 8/KG 53 at 1725 hrs) plus two damaged (5J+FU of 11/KG 4 and Wk Nr 7552 from III/KG 53). The sole loss matches with the claims by the Polish sqns but can anyone confirm any other losses?

In the QM's list dated 29-8-42 A1+KT w.n. 7571 crew of Oblt. Berkemann is shown as missing on 19-8-42 under Einsatz Osten while the KG53 book p 340 shows 'E' for England against their loss ?

Chris
They were four, two by pilots of 317 Sqn individually, one shared by pilots of 303 and one shared by pilots of 303 and 317. Possibly they were confused with Ju 88s?

Re: He 111s over Dieppe 19 Aug 42

Brian: NVM for Oblt Heinz Berkemann's loss says 'Bei Landungsunternehmen der Englaender am 19.8.42 bei Dieppe'.

Franek: A document produced a few days after the raid says 303 Sqn 1 2/3 He 111 317 Sqn 2 1/3 whilst Foreman says Giermer, Zumbach (shared) Glowacki, Rotitnicki, Rutecki (shared), Sztramko, Brzeski & Rutkowski one each?? Then the Northolt War Diary says Glowacki, Rutecki, Rokitnicki (spelling?) shared; Zumbach, Giermer, Sztramko (shared) Rutkowski, Brzeski one each. However, German losses were one destroyed, one, possibly two damaged

Thanks for that Chris as people have been saying the QM's lists are not always correct, I had altered this one from Dieppe to Russia in 1981 after a fellow researcher checked the QMs list for me, which looked correct when I checked myself following your Thread.

Hi Chris, the III/KG53 machine W.Nr 7552 mentioned in your first entry, could you add any further details as to this incident.
Any crew details or unit code?

Best regs,
Steve.

Re: He 111s over Dieppe 19 Aug 42

Chris
I have following claims.
Brzeski 317 1-0-0 near Dieppe
Rutkowski 317 1-0-0 near Dieppe
Zumbach 303, Giermer 303, Sztramko 317 1-0-0 North Dieppe
Głowacki 303, Rokitnicki 303, Rutecki 303 1-0-0 North Dieppe
If I understand my notes correctly, then films of Giermer, Głowacki and Rutecki are extant.
Unfortunately, I do not know if I have any reports from this combat.
I think I have some stills with Do 217s but this is another story.

Steve: Re Wk Nr 7552, just that Fw Heinrich Fenn of 8 Staffel was wounded & the ac damaged; he was killed in Nov 42.
Franek: Thanks for this. Having just had a package from the Polish Institute on Giermer, nothing on the camera gun shot so are they in the IWM?
