He111 3./KuFlGr.806 lost 20/3/40

Hi guys

On 20 March 1940, a He111 of 3./KuFlGr.806 crashed in the North Sea – Ltn
zur See Obermann and his crew picked up by Danish trawler and interned.

Can anyone add to this, please?

Cheers
Brian

3./KüFlGr 806 Heinkel He111J-1. Engine damaged by AA fire during attack on fishing vessels and ditched off the Dutch coast north-west of the Waddeneilanden 4.50 p.m. BO Lt zur See Helmut Obermann, and BF Oberfw Alfred Hubrich injured, FF Fw Hermann Kasch, and BM Uffz Robert Mehnert unhurt, rescued from dinghy by motor-cutter Vier Gebroeders and landed at IJmuiden next day. Aircraft M7+EL 100% write-off.
This crew was deemed ship-wrecked mariners and later repatriated to Germany.

And by the way, the "rescue" ship was Dutch, not Danish.

Peter

Just notice you say the code is M7+EL. In your book BoF then and now you say M7+LE. Just curious which is correct .

Hi Peter, Laurent & Stig

Wow! Thanks for that. I wonder from where my misinformation came?

Re: He111 3./KuFlGr.806 lost 20/3/40

Brian,

Maybe the internet ? But my guess is that your misinformation probably stems from someone simply misreading the NVM which also lists a 1./KuFlGr.806 crew lost on April 3, 1940, reported landed from a dinghy by the military attache in Denmark.

Stig,

Just so. My original source for the codes M7+LE as quoted in BoFrT&N was Illusies En Incidenten (1988) p123 which also mentions the M7+LF of the same unit circling the men in their dinghy. The authors' source for this is quoted as BMA: RM 118/146, KTB 3./806. RM 118/8, KTB KFlGr 106. But given the Staffel, and the usual Lw convention on codes, the balance of evidence suggests M7+EL & FL as probably being more correct ?

Thanks Peter

I would say your "assumption" feels pretty correct
