Missing Losses

There has been quite a bit of discussion recently about RAF claims and a lack of German losses but errors did occur. By means of eample, a Leistungsbuch for a German observer (said to be I/KG 100 but in fact 2/KG 28) said that on the night of 6-7 May 41, his He 111 suffered and engine failure and ditched. I could find no mention in the QMG's Returns (but stand by to be corrected) yet there is an NVM for their loss (He 111 H-5, Wk Nr 3881, 1T+HK ditched 50 km south of Lizard Pt). However the NVM said they were rescued by seaplane 3 days later, the Leistungsbuch says 11 hours. Just goes to prove there is nothing certain!

RT is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Missing Losses

For this one not Chris, he is reported as ditched at see on PQ 5027 2.KG28, crew later saved, but for sure some losses are missing but in a so small proportion that it's quite not worth arguing

Remi

I am not opposed to get the name of the crew saved...

Re: Missing Losses

Hi,

Yes Andreas, I have it too. Mine came from QMG returns, but I can't remember whether it was a later correction or not!

Regards,

David

Re: Missing Losses

Should have checked microfilm but it was not in John Foreman's book. Crew was Fw Fritz Brandt, Ofw Heinz Buboszu, Uffz Hohann Hofmann, Uffz Philipp Fischer. Just goes to prove there are many ways of skinning a cat.........

Re: Missing Losses

Hi, guys! Lot of laughs.. must have been a record number of answers within such a short timespan ;-)

I think what this and other threads really prove is that a cooperative effort in getting all the GenQu records into a relational database is a good thing.

Remi - please resend! If I haven't answered I haven't got it. My spam filter really acts up sometimes and throw out messages.

Re: Missing Losses

Hello all,
Can anyone say what the mission of 1T+HK was ?
F/Lt Haywood 615 Sqn. intercepted an unidentified aircraft near Llanberris with unconclusive results or does this refer to a Ju88 from 2 ObdL?
F/Lt Haywood lists the time as 02.45
Any help appreciated
Tony K

Re: Missing Losses

I too have this loss at Pl.Qu. 50 27 from the Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #3)-Vol.4 with not many other details. This is just another illustration of the mystery of the Gen.Qu.6.Abt. lists - it being so easy to overlook a non-descript report versus the specific details that Chris has. Another illustration of what makes this so fascinating, and, dare I say it, fun. In this case, the loss seems to be mentioned during the appropiate time frame covered by this particular loss volume. On the other hand, how many losses, crew and/or aircraft, have been 'missed' because they don't appear in the record until many months or even years after the fact, or appear in the correction pages? Good Lord, I find myself reviewing the same stuff over and over, and adding new entries to my db each time because I was a lazy git going through this stuff the first time!!!!

Re: Missing Losses

Hi Jim,

Thank God that it's not just me! It can be so depressing when you suddenly come across a page or so of later corrections or amendments that then have to be individually back checked to ensure that nothing has been missed. Mind you, if it was too easy maybe we wouldn't enjoy doing the research, as you suggest!

Kind regards,

David
